Or, three SSs and a Lambo. Perth is that rarest of things in 2012: a bona fide boomtown. Forget global recession. Western Australia is in the throes of a mining boom that’s rendered it immune, for the time being anyway, to the financial calamities currently nudging the economic structures of the larger world ever closer to oblivion. And Perth, being the capitol of W.A., and not coincidentally the only thing resembling an actual cosmopolitan city for, oh, about a thousand miles, has in the last decade been transformed into the physical manifestation of all of that new wealth being vacuumed out of the earth. It’s everywhere you look: fancy new buildings big and small, high-end restaurants and shops in the business district, galleries and boutiques in the hipster/student enclaves, everybody happy, everybody busy.
Fancy cars, too. Here’s a working man’s Holden hot-rod ute in SS configuration, a Bentley GTC Supersports patiently waiting for its driver to return from her Prada store errand, and a fantastically original vinyl-roofed Toyota Crown Super Saloon, bespeaking the rather more restrained opulence of an earlier era. Gratuitous Gallardo was parked a couple doors down from our hotel last night, across from a sushi joint. I prefer the place on the corner myself.
